Giving retired climbing rope a new life

How it started

After finding a pink retired climbing rope at a thrift store, I thought “how can I repurpose this rope”.

As climbers, our ropes are special and remind us of the climbs, and adventures we’ve endured.

After researching how other designers are giving climbing ropes a new life, I decided I wanted to transform the rope into a furniture piece that would last a lifetime!

Process

Sourcing a frame

The first step was sourcing a worn frame, stripping its frayed top, and adding nails where needed.
Prepping rope & weaving

To prep my retired climbing rope I took out the filler nylon string and flattened each rope segment. I then sewed the rope together and weaved it to the frame.
Upholstery

The most fun part of this process was using the air-compressed nail gun to upholster the weaved climbing rope!
